What I Wish I Knew Before Traveling to Vietnam
Vietnam is a fantastic destination with diverse landscapes, mouth-watering food, and incredibly friendly people. But like any trip, there are a few "small but crucial" things that can make your journey much more enjoyable if you know them in advance. Here are some tips from my own experience that I hope will help!
📌 1. Documents & Visa – Don’t Skip This!
If you're a foreign traveler, checking Vietnam’s visa policy should be your first step. Some countries get visa-free entry for 15–45 days, but others need an e-visa in advance.
Also:
Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months.
Take photos or copies of your passport and visa in case of loss.
💸 2. Vietnamese Currency & Payments
I was a bit overwhelmed at first by how high the numbers are — a 500,000 VND bill is common! It’s easy to confuse 20,000 with 200,000 since they look alike.
Tips:
Double-check your bills when paying or receiving change.
Exchange money at airports, banks, or reputable counters.
Cash is king, especially in rural areas. Always keep some small bills with you.
🚕 3. Getting Around – Chaotic but Fun!
Crossing the street in Vietnam is... an experience. Scooters are everywhere, and sometimes traffic lights feel optional.
What helped me:
Walk slowly and confidently when crossing – drivers will go around you.
Use Grab or Gojek in cities – it’s cheap, reliable, and avoids haggling.
Renting a motorbike? Bring an international license and wear a helmet!
🍲 4. Amazing Food, But Be Kind to Your Stomach
Vietnam’s street food is legendary – I loved phở, bánh mì, bún chả... but I overdid it once and, well, suffered the consequences 😅
Advice:
Eat where it’s busy with locals – usually cleaner and tastier.
Don’t drink tap water – buy bottled water instead.
Bring some digestive medicine, especially if your stomach is sensitive.
🗣️ 5. Language – Learn a Few Words!
Not everyone speaks English, especially outside tourist areas, but people are kind and willing to help.
Learning basic Vietnamese phrases like:
"Xin chào" (Hello)
"Cảm ơn" (Thank you)
"Bao nhiêu tiền?" (How much?)
… makes a big difference and earns you lots of smiles!
🙏 6. Respect Local Culture
Vietnamese people are warm, but also traditional. If you visit temples or pagodas, dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees), and speak softly.
Also, don’t be surprised if you’re expected to bargain in markets – it’s not rude; it’s part of the experience! Just do it with a smile.
📶 7. Internet & SIM Cards – Easy and Cheap
Wi-Fi is available almost everywhere – cafés, hotels, even on buses. But for convenience, I got a local 4G SIM card (Viettel, Vinaphone, Mobifone). Around 4–8 USD got me plenty of data for the entire trip.
☀️ 8. Weather & Best Time to Travel
Vietnam has diverse climates:
North: cold winters (end of year)
Central: rainy season around Sept–Nov
South: hot and sunny all year
Tet (Lunar New Year) is a special time, but keep in mind: prices rise, and many services close. Still, it’s an amazing cultural experience!
🚨 9. Stay Safe & Alert
Vietnam is generally safe, but small thefts do happen.
Don’t flash valuables in crowded places.
Avoid leaving your phone or wallet on open tables near the street.
Choose well-reviewed tour agencies to avoid scams.
🎒 Final Thoughts…
Vietnam is full of color, contrasts, and charm. From lush mountains to buzzing cities and serene beaches, every corner has something to offer. These little tips may save you from a few bumps along the way – and help you enjoy the journey to the fullest.
Wishing you a memorable adventure in Vietnam! 🇻🇳💚
